Abstract:

We perform direct numerical simulations (DNS) of the flow over the Boeing Gaussian bump in two configurations: the straight-ahead flow considered in published DNS, and in a 45° swept configuration, at the same bump Reynolds number of ReL = 1 million. In the baseline (unswept) configuration, we analyze the flow in the streamline coordinate system to illustrate the direct and indirect curvature effects on the mean momentum balance and turbulence budgets. The swept flow exhibits much stronger separation on the leeward side of the bump than the baseline configuration, arising from the crossflow induced by the pressure gradients imposed by the bump.
